This is a subject long time on my mind. To be able to tackle this problem, we first have to pray that our Heavenly Father, will know the desire and the intent of our hearts; to teach us His ways that we may walk in them. Search our heart O’ God, and if there is any iniquity in us we ask you to cleanse us now and make us whole. Reveal to us our secret faults, and help us to understand the error of our ways. May the words of our mouth and the meditation of our heart always be acceptable in your sight O’ Lord for you are our strength and our redeemer.
There are many Christians who never ask God for Truth. Some don’t even KNOW to ask. Some really haven’t the concern for it, as they are comfortable right as they are. Others do ask for the Truth. The question is, however, as to whether the Truth is what we REALLY want? Do we realize what we are asking for?
This question will puzzle you if you think that, “Truth,” is a list of Biblical doctrines. Or information that God tells us. If that is all Truth is, then sure, why not ask for it? All it will mean to us is an expanded knowledge of scripture, and the increased ability to parrot doctrines.
The fact is, TRUTH is the reality about Jesus Christ. It embodies His Person, and everything about Him. It includes all the ramifications of His finished work, and His life in us. Truth is the will of God and the reality of God. THAT – HE – is the Truth.
So if we “want the Truth,” what we are really saying is that we want to be adjusted to Jesus. Note that – not just our circumstances adjusted to Jesus – but US adjusted. In effect, we want God to do whatever is necessary IN US to make us able to fellowship and live in harmony with Christ.
Maybe NOW we realize a little more about what it would mean to know the Truth. It would mean the UNLEARNING and shattering of everything that is NOT the Truth. It would mean that anything about us, and our lives, which is not the will of God, and which is not in harmony with reality in Christ, must GO. It would mean that all ERROR – in our conduct, in our attitudes, and in our thinking – must be exposed and dealt with.
If we want the Truth, we need to warm up to the fact that the Truth will not respect our viewpoint, our desires, and our pride. The Truth will SLAY all of that. Indeed, the Truth will never be adjusted to us. God will need to adjust us to the truth – to adjust us to Jesus Christ.
But if we are not even aware of our secret faults, how can we really know Truth? Because basing what we believe on only partial information may lead us away from God rather than toward him.
In order for one to arrive at the truth of any matter, one must hear the whole matter.
Before destruction the heart of man is haughty;
And before honor goeth humility.
He that giveth answer before he heareth,
It is folly and shame unto him.
In other words, we must not be haughty or filled with pride and say to ourselves things like, “Oh I have heard that before and I just don’t believe that.” It may be that you have not heard the whole matter or that you have unknowingly hardened your heart before, and thereby you did not truly listen to what was being taught to you from the intent of the heart of the one who was doing the teaching.
There are many reasons why we unknowingly reject the TRUTH and become haughty or filled with pride refusing to hear and listen to those who do not believe EXACTLY as we believe.
“So be careful how you listen; for whoever has [a teachable heart], to him more [understanding] will be given; and whoever does not have [a longing for truth], even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him.” Jesus said that in Luke 8:18
You see, for one to truly know the truth, one must receive the word of God with all readiness of mind and have an open, unreserved condition of heart to prove to themselves that it is, in fact, the truth.
Now you may say to yourself that you have done this already and are confident that what you have been taught is, in fact, the truth, but have you TRULY heard the WHOLE MATTER? Are you absolutely certain without a doubt that you have heard and have truly understood the WHOLE MATTER?
So, please read the text with the mindset that perhaps, or just maybe you might have been taught incorrectly. Please understand what I am saying. I myself have been taught many doctrines throughout my Christian walk, which upon searching deeper for myself by the leading of the Holy Spirit have found to be in error. I sincerely believed that I was being taught the TRUTH at the time, but later on, the Holy Spirit revealed to me that some of what I was taught actually opposed or contradicted the pure undefiled TRUTH of the WHOLE word of God.
Satan is a deceiver and he will use sincere, well-meaning preachers, teachers and prophets of the word of God by mixing a little truth to peddle his lies and doctrines of devils. This does not mean that those who taught these doctrines knew that they were not teaching the truth. On the contrary, I am convinced that they sincerely believed that what they were teaching was the truth.
Nonetheless, error was taught even though those who were and are teaching these false doctrines sincerely believe they were and are teaching the truth. So then, how can one be sure he or she has been taught the truth of God’s word?
1 John 2:27 teaches us these words, “But the anointing which you received of him abides in you, and you need NOT that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teaches you of all things, and is TRUTH, and is NO lie, and even as it (the anointing of the Holy Spirit) has taught you, you shall abide in him.”
There are those that I have personally encountered who will not let go of the false teaching that they have received through the years, because they simply do not want to hear and listen to the TRUTH that might contradict standing viewpoints, as too much would be on the line. You see, just about any doctrine can be taught and presented in a very eloquent way, much, much better of what I may be able to do, and therefore some may be more inclined to hear and follow the more eloquent speaker. But the truth of the matter is that what some call a smooth talking preacher may just be tickling your ear and telling you what your flesh wants to hear.
If and only if the one who is seeking THE TRUTH, desires with all their heart to know the truth, the WHOLE TRUTH, and NOTHING but the TRUTH caring not who is right or wrong, will see truth as is, because the Holy Spirit will open the eyes of our understanding, when the requirements are fulfilled and meet.
So, what exactly could it be that holds us back from actually start following instead of going through all the motions, however noble they might be, to run errands, and never, when truly being honest, considering our flawed standing. If we will not lay down our lifestyle for God, we will never lay down our life for Him. It’s simply not possible. My greatest fear is, that most people in today’s Christian veneer are happy with the way things are and will not be interested in anything that opposes the truth as they see it.
When you ask people about their standing towards Truth and Holiness, what they probably will not do is outline a current relationship of submission and obedience to God. What they probably will not do is talk about their participation in an on-going process of being conformed to the image of Christ through the ministry of the Holy Spirit. What they probably will not do is tell you about a relationship with God that will, at times, be both excruciatingly painful and wonderfully loving, as He strips away the flesh and replaces it with His righteousness and holiness. And what you probably will not see is the repentance and humility He has shaped in their lives.
Instead, what you will see and hear is an elastic mask-like smile that is supposed to tell you everything is just great. You’ll hear them talking about all the things they’re doing or planning to do, how happy and positive they are, and how God blesses them materially. They sincerely believe they actually have a relationship with God, but all you see is a perceptible distance, an easily recognizable detachment from Him that they, say have a relationship with. It’s absolutely impossible to have a real relationship with the living Christ and not talk about it constantly!
So, my challenge to you is to forget everything you’ve ever learned in the past about the essential matters of truth, and simply get your Bible out and read the red letters in the Gospels. Just concentrate on what Jesus said, and ignore what people say about what He said.
Most professing Christians today believe that it’s up to them to decide how they’re going to live their lives and it’s up to God to bless them in whatever they decide. But Jesus says, if you want to know the way to the Father, you have to be willing to let go of your plans and desires, be willing to renounce what you want, and accept what God wants. This will make most people uncomfortable, but I’m going to just come right out and say it anyway — following Christ requires that we give up the control of our lives to God; we can’t be in charge anymore! No one wants to hear that. But, it’s true.
“Don’t you know your body is a sacred place? It’s where the Holy Spirit lives now. He’s God’s special gift to you (God’s presence inside of you, all the time). And your life no longer belongs to you. It belongs to God. It’s bought, and paid for – at a precious cost. So honor God and bring glory to Him through your submission and obedience.” (I Corinthians 6:19-20)
“Earnest effort is required to force your way through the narrow door that leads to salvation – to God! Many think they will enter this door, but will not be able to, because they were not willing to do what they had to do. They made a fatal mistake. Instead of being diligent and persistent in their pursuit of God, they simply followed the foolish crowd.” (Luke 13:24)
I thank you for helping me to take heed to all that I hear, whether this hearing is through the ear, or through the eye, or through feeling and touch. Help me heavenly Father by the leading of your Holy Spirit to guard my hearing in all these areas, so that I may discern your word of truth from any deceitful words of error that would bring harm and hinder my spiritual growth. I also thank you for teaching me how to hear and to keep my heart open to learn continually of your ways. I thank you for the hunger you have placed in my heart for your word. Help me to hide your word in my heart that I may not sin against you. Thank you, Father, for revealing your word of truth to me in all areas of my life so that I may live in all pleasing to you and help others to come to the knowledge of the truth as well.
This is the [remarkable degree of] confidence which we [as believers are entitled to] have before Him: that if we ask anything according to His will, [that is, consistent with His plan and purpose] He hears us. And if we know [for a fact, as indeed we do] that He hears and listens to us in whatever we ask, we [also] know [with settled and absolute knowledge] that we have [granted to us] the requests which we have asked from Him. —1 John 5:14-15 (AMP)
